"দ্বাদশ শ্রেণিতেও জীববিজ্ঞান ছিল আমার চতুর্থ বিষয়। গণিতটাই ভালো লাগতো বেশি। আমার ইচ্ছাই ছিল ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হব। কিন্তু আমার মায়ের খুব ইচ্ছে, ছেলে ডাক্তার হবে। মায়ের ইচ্ছের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা রেখে মেডিকেলে পরীক্ষা দেই । এবং টিকেও যাই। মাকে খুশি করার জন্যে শেষমেশ মেডিকেলেই ভর্তি হই।

কোনদিনও ভাবিনি পেডিয়াট্রিশিয়ান হব। মেডিকেলে পড়ার সময় ভাবতাম কার্ডিওলজি নিয়ে পড়ব। কার্ডিওলজির এক বিখ্যাত স্যারের পেছনে অনেকদিন ঘুরলাম। খুব আকাঙ্ক্ষা নিয়ে অপেক্ষা করতে লাগলাম। কিন্তু শেষে দেখা গেল কার্ডিওলজি নিয়েই আর পড়া হল না।

অনিচ্ছা সত্যেও পেডিয়াট্রিক্সেই ভর্তি হলাম। তখনও বুঝিনি পেডিয়াট্রিক্স আমাকে মানুষের এত কাছাকাছি করে দেবে। আজ প্রায় সাতাশ বছর যাবত ঠাকুরগাঁও-এ বসেই শিশুদের চিকিৎসা করছি। আমার এ কথাগুলো যারা পড়ছেন তাদের অধিকাংশই আমার শিশু পেশেন্ট ছিলেন, আমি নিশ্চিত।

এই পেশায় কতটা দিতে পেরেছি জানি না। তবে চেষ্টা করে যাচ্ছি। আমাকে অনেকে প্রশ্ন করেন, আমি গরীব পরিবারগুলোর কাছে পয়সা নেই না কেন। আমি বলি, সৃষ্টিকর্তা আমাকে চাকরি দিয়েছেন, বাড়ি দিয়েছেন। আমার মনে হয় না আমার আর কিছু লাগবে। কিছু পয়সা বাচিয়ে যদি তারা ওষুধটুকু কিনতে পারে, এটুকুতেই আমার শান্তি। মেডিকেল জীবন থেকেই মানুষের এ কষ্টগুলো আমাকে পীড়া দিত।

আসলে সামাজিক দায়বদ্ধতা থেকে যতটা পারছি করে যাচ্ছি। এই পেশায় এতোগুলো বছর সেবা করে আমি মানসিকভাবে যথেষ্ট পরিতৃপ্ত। আমাকে আবারও যদি সেই উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক জীবনে ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়, আমি সুনির্দিষ্টভাবে এই পেশাটিকেই বেছে নিবার সিদ্ধান্ত নিতাম।

বাকি জীবন ঠাকুরগাঁও-এ থেকেই শিশুদের চিকিৎসা করে যেতে চাই।"

"Biology was my fourth subject when I was in college. I preferred math more. I was firmly determined to be an Engineer. But my mother wanted me to be a doctor. That is why I appeared in the medical admission test and fortunately got chance. Finally, to please my mother I got admitted to medical.

I never thought to become a pediatrician. While studying at medical, I cherished to study ‘Cardiology’. I spent a long time behind a famous cardiologist. I was eagerly waiting. But, unfortunately, I could not make it happened.

Despite the reluctance, I started to study pediatrics. I did not realize that pediatrics would help me to reach people then. It’s been 27 years since I started treating infants. I am quite sure that most of the readers of this article are my pediatric patient.

I do not know how much I did serve through this profession. Still I am trying. A lot of people ask me why I do not ask for money from the poor families. I say, almighty has blessed me with lots of things. I believe, these are sufficient for me. If they can buy some medicines with that money, I feel reconciled. It hurt me since I was in medical.

In fact, I am trying to do as much as to complete my social responsibility. Serving so many years in this profession, I am satisfied enough. If I was given the opportunity to go back to my college life, I certainly would have chosen this profession again.

For the rest of my life, I wish to continue my treatment for the infants in Thakurgaon."
