"যখন পঞ্চম শ্রেণিতে তখন থেকেই ইউনিসেফের বিনামূল্যে দেওয়া রঙগুলো দিয়ে ছবি আঁকতাম। বাংলাদেশের পতাকা জ্যামিতিক বিন্যাসে আঁকতে পারদর্শী ছিলাম। নবম দশম শ্রেণিতে এসে আঁকাআঁকির প্রতি ঝোঁকটা আরও বেড়ে গেল। সেসময় ‘পূর্বাণী’ নামে একটা সাপ্তাহিক বের হত। নামকরা শিল্পীরা সেখানে আঁকতেন। আমি বাসস্ট্যান্ড থেকে সপ্তাহান্তে পত্রিকাটি সংগ্রহ করতাম। এক ধরনের ঘোর তৈরি হত আঁকাআঁকিগুলো দেখে। নিয়ম করে সেগুলো কেটে রাখতাম। আকার চেষ্টা করতাম। কিছুতেই কিছু হত না।

আমার স্কুলের এক মেধাবী সহপাঠীর আঁকা দেখে মুগ্ধ হতাম। ওর কাছে গিয়েই একটু আধটু ছবি আঁকার অনুশীলন করতাম। এভাবেই আমার ছবি আঁকার জীবনে পদার্পণ।

এসএসসি পাশ করার পরে রাজশাহী চারুকলায় বাবা ভর্তি করে দেন। সেসময় রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতার কারণে প্রচুর ছুটি পেতাম আর ঠাকুরগাঁও-এ চলে আসতাম।

১৯৮৬-এর দিকে ঠাকুরগাঁও স্টার ক্লাবের একটা নাটকের পোস্টার তৈরি করেছিলাম সারারাত জেগে। পরবর্তীতে একরাতে ৫০০ পোস্টারও ডিজাইন করেছি। কিন্তু আমার সেদিনের পোস্টার দেখে অডিটোরিয়ামে অনেকেই যে বাহবা দিয়েছিল সেটাই ছিল আমার কাজের প্রথম বড়সর স্বীকৃতি।

সেসময় টানা সাতদিন কাজ করে বাড়ি ফিরেছি এমনও ঘটনা আছে। প্রচ্ছদের কাজগুলো আমার জীবনে অনেক অভিজ্ঞতা সঞ্চয় করতে সাহায্য করেছে। এছাড়াও বিভিন্ন লিটলম্যাগেও কাজ করেছি। একবার তো গোটা সৈয়দপুর ক্যান্টনমেন্ট সাজিয়েছিলাম টানা ৭-৮ দিন কাজ করে। বাইরে কাজ করার অভিজ্ঞতা সেবারই প্রথম।

জিলা স্কুলের শতবর্ষ পূর্তির কাজটা ছিল আমার অনেক বড় একটা অর্জন। আমি নিজেকে নতুনভাবে উপস্থাপনের সুযোগ পেয়েছিলাম সেখানে।

শিক্ষকতার পাশাপাশি আঁকাআঁকি দারুণ লাগতে লাগল। সময়ের ধারাবাহিকতায় কাজের খাতাটাও ভারি হল। প্রেস ক্লাব, নিশ্চিন্তপুর থিয়েটার এবং শিল্পকলা একাডেমি চারুকলা ক্ষেত্রে অবদানের জন্য সম্মাননা দিল পর্যায়ক্রমে।

একবার কামাল লোহানি পিঠ চাপড়ে আমার কাজের অনেক প্রশংসা করে একটা বই উপহার দিয়েছিলেন। কাজের জন্য এরকম অনুপ্রেরণাগুলো বরাবরই আমাকে পথ চলতে সাহায্য করেছে। আমার অগণিত কাজগুলোর দিকে তাকালে মনে হয় শুধুমাত্র বিশ শতাংশ করতে পেরেছি। আশি শতাংশই বাকি। জীবনের অবশিষ্ট সময়টুকু ঠাকুরগাঁও-এ বসেই কাজ করে যেতে চাই। আসলে ঠাকুরগাঁও আমার ভালো লাগে। ঠাকুরগাঁও ছেড়ে আমি কোথাও যাই না।

একেকটা দিন যায়, আমি ঠাকুরগাঁও-এ একটা ‘ড্রয়িং স্টুডিও’ গড়ার স্বপ্ন দেখি। যেখানে ছবি আঁকার সরঞ্জাম থাকবে। সবাই আসবে, নিজের খুশিমত ছবি আঁকবে। গ্যালারি থাকবে, ছবির প্রদর্শনী হবে।

প্রতিদিনই স্বপ্নটা ধীরে ধীরে বুনতে থাকি, বুনন শেষ হলে সত্যিই গড়েই ফেলব আমার কল্পনার স্টুডিওটা।"

"I used to draw pictures with the free colors given for free from UNICEF when I was in class five. I was good at drawing the national flag in the geometric form. The impulse for drawing increased during class nine and ten. At that time, a weekly used to be published named ‘Purbani’. Well-known artists used to draw there. I used to collect the weekly from Bus Stand every weekend. I fell in illusion with those drawings. I used to cut and gather them orderly. I tried to draw but couldn't draw anything properly.

I was fascinated by the drawings of a talented classmate of mine. I started to practice drawing with his little help. Thus I stepped into the world of drawing.

After passing SSC, my father got me admitted into Rajshahi Fine Arts. At that time, for continuous political unrests, I used to move to Thakurgaon frequently.

In early 1986, I made a poster for a drama of Thakurgaon Star Club which took me a whole night. Though I've designed 500 posters overnight later in my life, but what I had done that day was the first big recognition of my work.

At that time, sometimes I had to work for seven days in a row before returning home. Cover actions helped to add a lot of experience in my life. I had also worked on various little magazines. Once I adorned the whole Saidpur Cantonment within 7-8 days. That was my first time experience to work outside of Thakurgaon.

The centennial Anniversary of Zilla School was a big achievement for me. I got the opportunity to truly redeem myself there.

In addition to the teaching profession, drawing began to feel great. The list of work began to expand too. Press Club, Nishchintapur Theater and Shilpokola Academy honored me for the contribution in fine arts.

Once Kamal Lohani patted on the shoulder and appreciated me with a book. This sort of appreciation always helped me along the way. When I look at my countless paintings and drawings, it feels like only twenty percent is completed yet. Eighty percent is still to come. I want to spend the rest of my life working at Thakurgaon. In fact, I like Thakurgaon. I don't want to leave this place.

These days, I have a dream to build a 'drawing studio'. Where there will be drawing tools. Everyone would be allowed to draw pictures of his own pleasure. There will be a gallery for painting exhibition.

Every day I fabricate the dream slowly. At the end of the knitting I will construct my studio."
